Astronomical Society

The Department of Physical Sciences of Technology (DPST), Faculty of Applied Sciences, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (SUSL), is one of the leading science departments in the country, with a strong academic focus on astronomy and astrophysics. Astrophysics is offered as a core curricular subject from the second year through the fourth year, supported by hands-on practical sessions and a broad range of related courses.

With more than 15 years of continuous academic engagement in astrophysics, the department recognizes its national responsibility to disseminate, promote, and advance astronomical knowledge not only among undergraduates of the university but also within the wider society.

Despite this strong academic foundation, the absence of a dedicated astronomical association within the university has limited students’ opportunities to actively engage in structured outreach programs, organize astronomy-focused events, and establish formal collaborations with external national and international institutions.

To address this gap and to provide a sustainable and recognized platform for astronomy-related activities, we propose the establishment of the Astronomical Society of Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka (ASSUSL) attached to the DPST.
